Futon Buying GuideHow to Choose the Perfect One

Futons are pieces of furniture that can easily transform from a couch to a bed, and back again. The steps to do this are sometimes as easy as pulling the bottom of the couch outwards and pushing it back in.

It’s easy to see why futons are such a popular choice in living room and bedroom furniture. They are often perfect for smaller areas, such as dorms, bedrooms, and apartments.

This guide will cover everything you need to know to pick the perfect futon for your home or office.

Types of Futons

The frame of your futon is important because it gives insight into your futon’s durability. Futons usually come with either wooden or metal frames, both of which are sturdy and easy to attach the converting mechanism to.

There are seven main types of futon frames, each one with their own pros and cons.

  • Bi-fold
  • Tri-fold
  • Loveseat
  • Chair
  • Wall hugger
  • Outdoor
  • Bunk bed futons

The most popular type of futon is the bi-fold futon. Bi-fold futons are the ones that most resemble a standard couch. One half of the mattress forms the seat of the couch, and the other half forms the backrest.

On bi-fold futons, the length of the couch is the same as the length of the bed. To move into a lying position, you simply need to pull the bottom of the couch out. The rest of the couch will move into a flat position, letting you lie down and get some rest.

Tri-fold futons are not quite as popular, though they are the oldest form of futon. These futons fold into three parts, which are called the back, the foot, and the seat. One of these parts either hangs over the back or is tucked under the futon. As with bi-fold futons, the length of the seating area is the width of the bed.

Tri-fold futons generally have less sitting room than a bi-fold futon, but are great for small spaces. They look like large comfy chairs when in the upright position. One negative is that they are a little harder to open up into a lying position than bi-fold futons are.

Loveseat futons

Loveseat futons are excellent if you want something small and cute that is still able to hold one or two people. Appearing as a lovely loveseat during the day, these pull out lengthwise into a twin size bed, though there are some models that come in queen size. These are great choices for outdoor futons. Imagine lying on your new futon in your backyard, soaking up the sun!

Futon chair

If you simply do not have enough room for a traditional futon, you may want to consider a futon chair. Futon chairs pull out to reveal a twin-sized bed below and are best for one extra guest.

These usually measure about 28 inches long and 54 inches wide and come with either a wooden or a metal frame.

A futon chair with a metal frame will be cheaper, but it will also be less sturdy. If you have the money, it would be better to go with a wooden frame. Not only will it last longer, but it will be easier to match your existing décor.

Most futon chairs come in cotton, making them comfy yet flexible. Memory foam and polyester are also popular choices.

Wall hugger

Wall hugger futons are those that can be transformed from a lying position to a sitting position, or vice versa, without having to move the furniture.

Most other futons need a clearance space of about a foot away from the wall to be able to switch from a lying to a sitting position.

The backs of wall huggers can sit right on the wall, and you will still have no trouble converting it one way or the other.

This is a great choice if you have limited space to work with, or if you just do not look forward to having to move your futon any time you decide to lay it flat.

Outdoor futons

Outdoor futons are perfect additions to your patio to allow for rest and relaxation in the sun. These are almost always bi-fold, chair-sized futons, though there are some models that come in couch-sized bi-fold style.

The main difference between indoor and outdoor futons is that the latter are usually covered in some sort of weather protective fabric, and the frame will be weather treated as well. Outdoor futons typically come with a cute little foot stool to provide even more comfort.

If you are putting your futon outside, make sure that the material used to cover your futon is designed to be in the sun and moisture for a long period of time.

Bunk bed futons

If you’re looking for a space-saving bed option for your home, you may want to consider a bunk bed futon. Bunk bed futons are a type of bunk bed that features a futon mattress on the bottom bunk.

This can be a great option if you have a smaller bedroom or if you need to create a sleeping space for guests in your home.

Futon Styles

It is important to match your new futon as closely as possible with the furniture that is already in place in whatever room you are adding the futon.

Of course, you can always go the other way and choose something that makes the futon the focal point of your room.

Most people picture the basic dorm room style futon in their mind, but some futons can actually be very stylish and trendy. There are several styles of futons to choose from.

Modern futons

Modern futons are very simple, stylish and chic. This style is often made of natural materials, such as wood or stone, and features a clean look. This style looks best in a room with a contemporary vibe.

Farmhouse futons

Farmhouse style futons are usually wooden framed, homey and feature a slightly distressed look. These go well in a country style room or home and even work great on a closed in patio.

Armless futons

Armless futons are typically cheaper than futons with arms and can be a good option for people who are on a budget. Armless futons can also be a good choice for taller people or those who are low on space since there are no armrests in the way.

Transitional futons

This style is a mix of classic and trendy. These futons look like they would fit in in any era. This style is widely popular since it is easily matched with other styles of furniture. It’s characterized by clean lines and a simple, yet stylish, design.

If you are someone who enjoys change and enjoys blending and matching different styles, a transitional style futon might be a good fit.

Converitable sofas

These are not technically futons but still a great option if you need a couch and a bed in one.

What’s the difference? The mattress on a futon is both the seat and the bed whereas the mattress on a convertible sofa is concealed inside.

Mattresses & Covers

It is important to choose the right mattress for your futon. Make sure that the mattress you select is as firm as you like it and that it is flexible enough to be folded either two or three times, depending on which type of frame you chose for your futon.

Look for a mattress that is firm. This will ensure that it will not sag with a lot of use. Futon mattresses have a shorter life span than standard mattresses, so keep this in mind when shopping for your new futon.

There are three main types of mattresses to choose from, each one boasting its own benefits and drawbacks.

Cotton & Foam

The most popular type of mattress for a futon is a cotton and foam combo. These mattresses are very light, which means that it will be that much easier to pull your futon out into a lying position or fold it back up to a seated position.

They are so light, in fact, that some people like to roll up a cotton futon mattress and store it for guests, whether they have a futon or not.

Make sure not to get your cotton and foam mattress too thick, or else you might have trouble folding it back up after sleeping on it.

If you prefer a firmer mattress, you might want to consider one with springs inside of it. These futon mattresses are very similar to the innerspring mattresses that go on the beds in your house, but they will be just as flexible as a standard cotton futon mattress.

However, a spring mattress will usually be much heavier than a cotton mattress. Innerspring mattresses usually come with several hundred coils, though more coils do not always translate to higher quality.

These coils are held between layers of foam or cotton, and, because of all of the coils, an innerspring mattress will usually be more firm than other types of mattresses.

Make sure to do your research, because the comfort level of your innerspring futon mattress will depend upon the quality of the springs inside.

If you decide to go with a cheaper innerspring mattress, the springs could break and poke through your mattress.

Memory Foam

Is comfort and support the number one factor in your choice of futon mattress? Memory foam has become increasingly popular in recent years, and futons are now no strangers to memory foam mattresses.

Memory foam futon mattresses are the lightest choice, but they are also the softest and the comfiest.

Memory foam is also the best choice for high traffic areas since it will hold its shape better than any other type of mattress.

Whereas other types of mattresses need a topper, memory foams are soft enough to be used without.

Memory foam mattresses may help with any back pain or pressure points that you struggle with. Many people say it’s like sleeping on a cloud.

Mattress Size

One major part of choosing a mattress for your futon is making sure that you are buying the correct size. Buying a mattress that is either too small or too large will impact the functionality of your futon.

A twin mattress is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. These are best placed in a small area such as a dorm room or a child’s bedroom.

twin XL

A double (full) mattress can sleep two people, as long as they don’t mind being close. This is the most popular futon size. These mattresses are 54 inches wide and 75 inches long.

A queen mattress is probably the most popular choice for two people. These are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

A king mattress is not as common for a futon but still an option. It is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long.

Futon mattresses also come in a California king size. These are much harder to find and to fold back up but great for larger people. They are 72 inches wide and 84 inches long.

Make sure your mattress is between 6 and 9 inches for the most comfort and ease-of-use.

If you futon will spend most of its time in the sitting position, you might want to opt for a thinner mattress, so it will be easier to fold up inside of the futon. You may also want to add a mattress pad on top of a thinner model for more comfort.

Grip Strips

Consider buying some grip strips to help keep your futon mattress in place on the frame. Futon mattresses have a tendency to move around, which can end up being fairly annoying.

Grip strips are made from either foam or rubber, though the foam strips usually work better. The foam strips are applied to the frame, while the rubber strips depend on friction to stop your mattress from sliding around.

Futon mattresses come with a casing that will work perfectly fine by itself. However, you can also buy a futon mattress cover.

These covers will allow you to further customize your futon, prolong its life, and protect your mattress from messes and spills. All with the luxury of being easy to clean. You can just throw them in the washer.

If you decide to buy a cover, make sure that it fits the mattress and that it does not impede the futon’s movement from lying to sitting.

Also, make sure to buy a high quality cover with a zipper for easy removal. With a cover, you have the freedom to choose whichever color or pattern that you want.

You can even get more than one cover so that you will be able to change the look of your futon on a whim.

Location & Space

Now that you have an idea of the styles and sizes of futons on the market, you’ll want to check to see which type would fit best in your room.

Measure the space you plan to place it in and add another two feet or so in front for foot traffic.

Futons can double in size when turned into the sleeping position so take that into account when measuring. You may find that a futon chair or twin size is perfect for the amount of room you have.

If you do not have a lot of space to put your new futon in, you will obviously want to consider a futon with a smaller mattress size or even a tri-fold futon. This way, your futon will take up as little space as possible while in the seated position.

Remember that wall hugger futons are also an option if you don’t have the space to lean the chair back.

Futon Use

It is important to take the time to decide how your futon will be used most of the time.

Will it be a lounge for your teen’s bedroom, only turning into a sleeping device when he or she has a friend over? Will it solely be used as a bed?

Perhaps you will use it as both on a daily basis. Deciding this will help you make some of the other choices about your futon.

For instance, if your futon will mostly be used for sleeping, you will want to get a more comfy mattress for your new futon.

If you are using it as both a seat and a bed evenly, make sure that you get a futon whose frame is easily converted from a lying position to a seated position and back again. You will not want to fight with converting your futon every day.

Make sure that the frame material matches who will be using the futon. You will want to get a very sturdy frame if this will be a child’s futon and if you will be converting it back and forth often.

However, if you are putting your new futon in the living room, you might not want a metal frame that will clash visually with all of your wooden living room furniture.

If you need a futon to hold more than one person, go for a full size futon or larger. Make sure that your final choice meets all of your needs.

Whether you are using it as a sofa, extra sleeping space, or as a small room solution such as a child’s room or a dorm room, futons are fun, enjoyable pieces of furniture that make a great addition to any room.
