Air Hockey Table Buying GuideHow to Choose the Perfect One

Are you thinking of adding an air hockey table to your game room? An air hockey table will add hours of fun times to your memories, and anyone can play, regardless of skill level.

It also has benefits for your health. Playing air hockey can help improve your coordination, reaction time, and hand-eye coordination. Plus, it’s a great way to socialize and get some exercise. Read on to discover all the things you need to consider before you choose the perfect air hockey table.

Types of Air Hockey Tables

One of the first decisions that you will be faced with is what type of air hockey table to buy. The good news is that there are only two choices in this category, which should make the decision a little simpler.

The standard type of air hockey table is the most familiar. These classic tables are the ones that are usually seen in arcades and game rooms.

Players stand on opposite ends of the table and hit the puck back and forth, trying to score in their goal and block their opponent’s shots. The first to score five goals wins the game.

The other less known type of air hockey table is the Boom-A-Rang style table. These tables get their name from their shape.

If you decide to get this style of table, the two opposing players will stand on the same side and hit the puck towards the opposite end of the table.

The goal is to hit the puck at an angle, trying to make it to the other team’s goal, which is right beside yours. Boom-A-Rang style air hockey tables are a good choice if you have limited space in which to set your table up.

These tables can be placed against a wall as opposed to the classic style which requires room to stand at both ends.

Air Hockey Table Size

Depending on where you plan to put your air hockey table, you will need to make a decision about what size table to get.

You will want to make sure that there is enough room as well as a few feet on each end for foot traffic and to allow the players to move freely. The other step is to measure all of the doorways you will have to move through, in case you decide to move your air hockey table in the future.

As mentioned above, Boom-A-Rang style tables take up less space, so if you do not have a lot of room, this type may be your best option.

Standard air hockey tables are longer than Boom-A-Rang styles ones, and they will need a lot more space. These tables are normally around eight feet long and four feet wide, so make sure to measure your room to ensure that they will be able to fit.

If you do not want a full size table, there are smaller options on the market, such as table top versions. These tables can be as little as four feet long and are built for kids or light use.

Air hockey tables do not come assembled. Most air hockey tables require you to simply attach the legs, but the full size ones will require extra work.

If you foresee your air hockey table getting a lot of use, or if some of your family members are competitive or rowdy, you’ll want to ensure that your table is sturdy and well-built.

Some of the cheaper air hockey tables are built out of cheaper materials that will not hold up well under a lot of use and may be subject to warping, cracking, or chipping.

Make sure that the legs on the air hockey table are securely fastened. Wood or steel legs will be the sturdiest options.

You can even look for a table that has leg levelers so that your table can grow with your family. These will allow you to raise the height of the table as your kids get taller.

The sidewalls of the air hockey table are also an important aspect to consider. These sidewalls are what the air hockey puck will be hitting, so make sure that they are sturdy as well. You will see air hockey tables with plastic or laminate side walls, but these should only be an option if you are on a budget.

These types of side walls are easily dented, resulting in your puck making strange bounces off the side wall in a direction that you did not intend. Instead, go for nylon, steel or aluminum. These materials will hold up better against hard wear and tear.

Air hockey tables are gaming tables that need a working motor. When the table arrives, turn it on and check to make sure it isn’t so loud that it will become annoying.

Check to see the chamber as well. This is the area under the surface of the table where the air builds up. When there is enough air in the chamber, the pressure causes the air to shoot through to the playing surface.

To check this, just run your hand over the playing surface while the air hockey table is turned on to ensure that the air flow is even at all areas.

Pucks come in two different sizes: small and large. It is important to get the right size puck to ensure proper play.

If you get a large size puck for a smaller table, your table might not provide enough air flow to get the large puck off the playing surface. Games will be much more fun and exciting if you have the right size.

Air hockey tables that use small pucks are usually cheaper, both in cost and construction, so these are perfect if you have a smaller budget or plan on light use. These tables will usually have a smaller motor, which means that they will not be able to make a larger puck float.

Small pucks usually measure about 2 ¾ inches wide. Because small pucks weigh less, they can easily turn into a flying weapon when hit too hard. Please remember to be careful so that a small puck does not fly up and hit you in the face.

Air hockey tables that use large pucks are meant for heavier – even commercial use – such as in arcades or public game rooms. These tables have one or two large motors. They are more costly, but they are also sturdier and will last much longer than smaller, cheaper models.

Large pucks usually measure about 3 ¼ inches wide. If you are getting an air hockey table for teens and adults, you will probably want to get a table that uses large pucks, since these can take more force.

Besides the size of the puck, there are also many options for the type of puck. There are pucks that come in different colors, logos and designs.

Some other, less common options for pucks are glow-in-the-dark, noise reducing, and even pucks with odd shapes. How fun would it be to play a game of air hockey with a three or six-sided puck?

Mallets (Pushers)

Mallets are what you use to hit the puck back and forth during the game and are also known as strikers, paddles or pushers. Make sure that your mallet is the correct size for your puck as well as the table. A mallet that is too large can also cause the puck to fly off the table.

You can choose to get all plastic or have the bottom of your mallets covered in felt. Felt pads slow down the game somewhat, but will prevent your table from major scratches and help it last longer.

If you do go for felt, make sure to vacuum the bottom of the paddle every couple of months. Do the same for the table to pull out any dust that may have settled inside the air holes.

There are also ergonomic mallets, which allow you to grip the mallet more comfortably. Even better is that these ergonomic mallets come with spaces to protect your fingers. This means no more getting your finger whacked or smashed by a hard-hit puck.

There are two main options for scoring: manual or digital. This is really just personal choice.

Some air hockey tables come with devices that allow the players to keep score for themselves. These devices look like an abacus and allow players to slide beads from side to side as a way to mark points.

The benefit of a manual scoring system is that it allows players to keep any rules that they want, as well as add or take away any accidental goals.

Air hockey tables with digital scoring will automatically mark a point every time the puck goes into the goal, and will even sometimes end the game once a player has won.

With this option, players can keep playing without having to worry about marking down points. This can provide smoother overall play, though there is no way to erase accidental goals.

If you decide to get an air hockey table with digital scoring, make sure that this unit plugs into the wall so that you won’t have to worry about batteries.

Regardless of scoring option, your best bet is to buy an air hockey table with an in-rail style goal. Plastic goals are easily broken and will be more of a hassle than they are worth.

Look & Lighting

Air hockey tables all look different, and that can be a little daunting if you are out shopping for one.

Do you want a bright and flashy air hockey table that will grab your guests’ attention? Or do you want a more subtle and classic look so that your air hockey table will blend in with the rest of your room?

Some air hockey tables come with built-in overhead lighting, which will help improve game play. You do not even have to turn on the room light. Just turn on your air hockey table and get to playing!

Some tables also have a black light option, in case you decide to get those glow-in-the-dark mallets. And some tables light up from below, which can cause a pretty dramatic glow on each new game.

As always, budget is an important factor in the choice of which table to get. The cheapest tables will cost you about $100, but of course you will get what you pay for. The most expensive tables can run over $1,000.

There is nothing wrong with buying a lower priced table, as long as you don’t plan to play as often. It might not hold up to wear and tear as well as one of the high-end models.

Mid-priced air hockey tables range from just one step above the budget model to right below the high-end model. These are best for most dens, man caves and family sizes.

High end models are just that. They offer all the bells and whistles, the smoothest game play and the longest life span. If you choose a high end model, be sure you get your money’s worth out of it by playing often and using all of the extra features.

There is always the option of finding a used air hockey table for sale. Just remember to inspect it before you agree to buy. Used tables can come with defects that aren’t always obvious. It is hard to see how much dirt and dust has built up inside the air holes.

It may also be difficult to tell whether the blower motor is on its last legs. With a new air hockey table you get the peace of mind that comes with a warranty. New tables make it much easier to replace parts as well.

Buying an air hockey table shouldn’t feel so tough now. There are so many brands, models, and options to pick from. In order to choose the best one for you, think about how much space you have, the style you like and how much money you can afford to spend.

Our floating list along the top or the right has something for everyone. Whatever your skill level, budget or space, there is an air hockey table for you.
